Patterns, Seeing, & Change

After experiencing a profound spiritual awakening earlier this year, patterns were a strong theme for me.

I realized how asleep I had been for so much of my life. Allowing the patterns that had created themselves in my brain, and ultimately in my subconscious, to dictate most of my life.

As I contemplated these things, I meditated on this concept that emerged:

Spot the pattern.

See the pattern.

Break the pattern.

Spotting patterns, seeing them, and breaking them, I thought was part of the key to wholeness. And I think it often can be.

Patterns in and of themselves are not bad, though.

The reason Steve Jobs wore the same clothes everyday is because he didn't want to waste energy on such a menial decision. I'm not against having more than one outfit, but I do think there is wisdom in such thinking.

Having the discipline to discern which patterns are good for you is, well, good for you. But over time, I realized breaking every pattern simply for the sake of breaking it was in and of itself a pattern. And one that wasn't necessarily always fruitful.

So over time, rather than seeking to be patternless, the concept evolved to:

See the pattern.

See the pattern.

See the pattern.

I have sat with this concept now for around 6 months. It feels right to me.

Wholeness is often more about clear seeing than it is about change. We don't see more clearly by changing, we change by seeing more clearly.
